Drug interactions

I have come down with a terrible head cold which is rare for me.  So I took my list of medications into the pharmacist and asked which over the counter medications I could take to ease my symptoms.  She did some research and basically it was slim pickings.

This prompted me to share the list of things that I cannot have due to my medications.  This same list would go for any Bipolar:

  • Robitussin DM and similar brands
  • Medications for depression (I am on some but it is a ‘risk’ we are taking)
  • Many antihistamines
  • Cough syrup
  • Medications for high blood pressure
  • NSAIDs
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Ibuprofen and Naproxen
  • Aspirin
  • Demerol
  • Water pills

I can’t overindulge in food because of the excessive weight gain with the lithium.

I also can’t have alcohol for fear of interactions (that’s ok. I had a problem anyway!).

When I play sports I watch my heart rate.  And I have my blood work checked monthly for lithium levels, and to ensure I have no kidney or liver damage or a thyroid problem from my medication.  So life altering is this medication!
